Multimodal Interface Technologies for UAV Ground Control Stations
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper examines different technologies that can be applied in the design and development of a ground control station for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) equipped with multimodal interfaces. Multimodal technologies employ multiple sensory channels/modalities for information transmission as well as for system control. Examples of these technologies could be haptic feedback, head tracking, auditory information (3D audio), voice control, tactile displays, etc. The applicability and benefits of those technologies is analyzed for a task consisting in the acknowledgement of alerts in an UAV ground control station composed by three screens and managed by a single operator. For this purpose, several experiments were conducted with a group of individuals using different combinations of modal conditions (visual, aural and tactile).

The studies in aerial vehicles modeling and control have been increased rapidly recently. In this paper , a coordination of two types of heterogeneous robots , namely unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) is considered. In this paper the UAV plays the role of a virtual leader for the UGVs. The system consists of a vision- based target detection algorithm that uses the ...
متن کاملGSM Technology as a Communication Media for an Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle GSM Technology as a Communication Media for an Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming more reliable, autonomous and easier to use with great potential for commercial use in common airspace in the near future. Though autonomous UAVs often do not rely on communication links with the ground during flight, communication is necessary and essential in accomplishing complex mission tasks where the ground operator is an essential part of the ...
متن کاملBackhaul For Low-Altitude UAVs in Urban Environments
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) acting as access points in cellular networks require wireless backhauls to the core network. In this paper we employ stochastic geometry to carry out an analysis of the UAV backhaul performance that can be achieved with a network of dedicated ground stations. We provide analytical expressions for the probability of successfully establishing a backhaul and the exp...
متن کاملNatural Language Based Multimodal Interface for UAV Mission Planning
As the number of viable applications for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems increases at an exponential rate, interfaces that reduce the reliance on highly skilled engineers and pilots must be developed. Recent work aims to make use of common human communication modalities such as speech and gesture. This paper explores a multimodal natural language interface that uses a combination of speec...
